An October of Deep Inquiry, Relationships, and Inner Work

October brings a shift in tone and tempo, as much of the month's energy turns inward, deep, and contemplative. With both Venus and Mercury turning retrograde, and in Scorpio no less, this month asks us to slow down and do some real inner and relational work. Plenty of Pluto signatures and dynamic aspects show up, bringing a dimension of friction and potency that, while confronting, may yield real growth and a new understanding of our own individual values, perspective, and stance. This month may not be a walk in the park, yet it can be a time for looking ourselves and each other square in the eye, ideally with love and kindness. All of this unfolds against the backdrop of Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus as they remain in their rare and flowing alignment from the summer. This serves to continually remind us, amid the uncertainty we face collectively, that the ground beneath our feet continues to shift in ways that are unsettling, yet also transformational.

Early in the month, the Libra Sun opposes Saturn in Aries, asking us to take responsibility for what we know is ours to look after, as we find that tricky balance between sovereignty and togetherness, autonomy and interdependence. At the same time, a potent grand cross forms, with Mars in early Leo opposite Pluto in Aquarius, square Mercury in Scorpio opposite Chiron at the very last degree of Aries (an out-of-sign aspect, but very close by degree). Questions of agency and power may flare up, along with the stories we tell ourselves and the old patterns within us that survive, shaped around painful, formative experiences. It may be helpful to pause, slow things down and ask whether we are responding from our wounding or from our wisdom.

Then on October 3rd, Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio, beginning a six-week journey that carries us through the rest of October and on until November 13th. This is really the heart of the month's story. The Venus Retrograde has us looking inward at how we are as relational creatures, at the state of our connections, and at our self-worth and self-love. In Scorpio there is the benefit of a deep, no-nonsense undertone asking us to inquire very honestly. It is a potent time to reassess, see what no longer fits, and offer gratitude for what we truly treasure.

A few days after she stations, Venus squares Mars, bringing some heat and light to our relationships. We may be tasked both with finding openings for connection and with needing to get very clear about our boundaries. Where we fall into feelings of defense or collapse, we are invited to meditate on what we are actively, or perhaps unconsciously, choosing, and on the state of our self-worth and individual values in relationship to those choices.

The New Moon in Libra on the 10th brings relationships further into focus. With Venus, this New Moon's ruler, in retrograde motion, there may be some renegotiation taking place. Themes of justice and yearning for balance may arise alongside deep-seated emotions. What comes can also be a catalyst for clarifying our self-trust. The invitation is to simply be present with what is, trusting the organic unfolding of this significant period.

Mid-month, Pluto stations direct while Venus squares him from Scorpio, bringing deep, far-reaching internal transformation. Venus herself is in the midst of her mythological metamorphosis, disappearing from view as the evening star on her underworld journey, to be reborn as the morning star on the 30th. There could be a stripping away of what is false and a reclaiming of what is true, a kind of potent alchemy, remembering who we really are rather than what any unhelpful cultural conditioning has shaped us to be.

As Libra season closes, the Sun enters Scorpio on the 23rd and, that evening, meets Venus for her Cazimi, when she is purified and renewed in the heart of the Sun. This is the potent peak of the Venus Retrograde journey, a moment when something about our self-worth and values may become available to see, feel, and integrate.

The very next day, Mercury stations retrograde, also in Scorpio, until November 13th. Mercury then recovers, in its post-retrograde shadow period, until November 29th. Its focus is more mental, having us reexamine the stories we tell ourselves, the beliefs we hold, and the ways we communicate. It is a great time for journaling, deep conversation, and research. With the Sun squaring Pluto through these same days, there is a reckoning quality that leaves no stone unturned. When we get present to the real emotional truth of a pattern, that alone can often unlock the bind that holds it in place, letting something within us be liberated and renewed.

The October month culminates with the Full Moon in Taurus on the 25th. On the same day, Venus slips back into Libra, her place of rulership. Here there is perhaps a little more spaciousness, a chance to catch our breath. Taurus beckons us into presence with our bodies, inviting all that has been arising to move, reorganize, and find new expression. The Moon's out-of-sign conjunction with Chiron may touch wounds around self-worth, the body, and relationship, including our relationship with ourselves. With Haumea close to the Sun and Venus, we are reminded of nature's ample abundance, of enough resource that every mouth can be fed. Perhaps we can offer that same sense of enoughness within, so that every inner voice feels cared for. When the light of love touches the places that feel lack, what might they come to know?

October is asking a lot of us, and it is only human to feel its weight. Yet beneath all this retrograde motion runs a deep invitation to turn toward what matters most, with honesty, patience, and care. What we can tend to now, slowly and with love, will keep ripening as we move into November.
