This is another dynamic situation that we find ourselves in, as the eleventh month begins and the year staggers toward its end point. Not so much a departure from the previous summer, this November month is rather a continuation. The Libra New Moon from October 21st – that kicked off the lunation cycle that governs November’s first half – features Uranus and Pluto in close trine at the very beginning of their newly resident signs of Gemini and Aquarius, where they stand as strong harbingers for novelty and change. There are other interesting dual-planet combinations that factor into this recent New Moon and are therefore featured this month. The New Moon at 28° Libra, right on the very edge of Scorpio, is square Pluto, and quincunx Uranus in their one-degree trine, bringing them both front and center. Another pairing from the late Libra New Moon is provided by the four-degree conjunction of Saturn and Neptune, with Saturn at 26° Pisces and Neptune at 0° Aries; their midpoint of 28° Pisces being precisely quincunx to the New Moon degree. This amalgamation of antithetical planetary symbols thus again strongly figures in this month’s astrology. Then too, Mars and Mercury are in partile or same-degree conjunction, and on a significant degree as well, namely 20° Scorpio. Mercury is also in tight contra-parallel to Trickster Uranus. With Uranus also in quincunx to the Sun/Moon position, there is in fact a Yod, or “finger of God,” aspect pattern, from Saturn/Neptune and Uranus, focused on the New Moon. This makes this recent lunation all the more poignant and meaningful, applying to both the Libra and the Scorpio signs in this very dramatic New Moon chart that characterizes the November month.
We also find Jupiter and Saturn quite involved with each other, in a close trine for the entire month, since they are each stationing now, Jupiter retrograde, and Saturn direct, so that they in each of their respective signs, are moving slowly or not at all; changing position each day by only a few minutes of a degree. Together these “social planets” refer to the surrounding society and its machinations, and to the way that this area interferes with or contributes to the general wellbeing; yours in particular. This is an area that could deserve special attention this month.
Chiron and Eris also deserve mention, in their close ongoing conjunction at 24°and 25°Aries, especially since this is squared by Jupiter in Cancer, which is stationing retrograde on the 11th, and hence more consequential. Saturn in Pisces stays in trine with Jupiter all month, as described above, adding to this concentration of energies especially in the timing of the month’s lunations. The Eris archetypal characterization of spiritual or feminine warrior in support of soul intention, which I have pioneered in my well-known book, The Tenth Planet, contributes the notion that, in working on our internal wounding this month – the likely residue of early childhood trauma – there are important soul lessons to be gained. This makes logical sense, because it is often the case that inner wounding can distract us from being able to present to the world our most authentic version of who we are. It might be more important than ever to do this work on ourselves, and for ourselves, during this critical monthly cycle.
Mercury and Mars being exactly conjunct in the recent October Libra New Moon, at 20° of Scorpio contributes quite a bit of energy to this particular Mercury Retrograde period, especially since 20° is where Mercury is also positioned at the extreme boundary of its backward motion, arrived at on November 29th, when it stations direct, and is therefore also the opening degree of Mercury’s pre-retrograde shadow period.
The Taurus Full Moon of the 5th is quite a dynamic lunation as well, with the Moon’s ruler, Venus, at 28° of Libra, the focus of another tight Yod from Neptune at 29° Pisces and Uranus at precisely 0° of Gemini. Meanwhile, Gemini’s ruler, Mercury, heading into retrograde, is closely contra-parallel the transformational energies of Pluto, in trine with Uranus. This is – again – quite a stew of archetypal energies and another indication of the immense potency of this month’s astrology.
The Moon’s Last Quarter takes place on the 11th, at 20° of Leo (Moon) and Scorpio (the Sun), as Jupiter turns retrograde in perfect trine with Saturn; Uranus, having backed up out of the Gemini sign to 29° of Taurus, lies in partile sextile with Neptune at 29° Pisces. This is another key lunation and is the lunar phase that noted 20th century astrologer Dane Rudhyar called a “crisis in consciousness.” This as retrograde Mercury conjuncts Mars and closely aspects Venus, additionally indicating, in another way, a shift in the retrograde and in it’s the quality of its introspective energy.
The late Scorpio New Moon makes for another consequential lunation since retrograde Mercury is at this point in perfect conjunction with the Sun and Moon at 28° Scorpio. Mercury’s close conjunction with the Sun, known as its Cazimi, represents a significant moment of clarity in the midst of the retrograde cycle, which is also considered one peak of the entire retrograde, the eye of the storm. That this Mercury- Sun configuration should take place exactly at the New Moon is remarkable and another indication that we are living through unusual times.
The month’s ending week features a grand trine between Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Pisces, and Venus perched at 26° Scorpio, and this might be a somewhat positive and helpful indication as the month winds down and as Mercury also stations direct. All in all, this November month is quite an intense one and reflects the intensity of our current developmental process, on societal and individual levels both. We could say “fasten your seat belts” except that they have likely already been long deployed; and we could also say that this is indeed the fall and winter when everyone needs to stand up and be counted. That message is extremely relevant and cannot be overstated.
