A Full Moon of Transformational Intensity with Hope for the Future

Thursday’s Capricorn Full Moon arrives on July 10th in the early afternoon, at 1:37 pm PT, later afternoon and evening for the east coast and Europe, and represents the mid-lunation of two extremely strong New Moons, the first being the June 25th Cancer New Moon that we recently described and lived through, and the second being the July 24th Leo New Moon, at 2° of the sign, which is even more powerful in terms of outer planet combinations. In the current Full Moon configuration, while the normal longitudinal aspects from Sun and Moon do not contribute much, there is an exact contra-parallel from Jupiter to Pluto, which is significant, reminding us that we currently find ourselves in extremely transformational times.

Uranus having just recently crossed into Gemini, thereby making a very close trine to Pluto in early Aquarius, retrograde at 2°, and with Saturn and Neptune separated by ¼ of a degree at about 2° of Aries, so at the approximate midpoint of this trine, these four outer planets are in a very tight and thus highly significant configuration of sextiles and trines. While these are “flowing” aspects and therefore slightly less problematic than squares or oppositions, this is still an amazing and potent combination of outer planet energies which might be compared to the volatile 1960s when similar alignments were taking place. Just as then, there is now also a time of counter-cultural rebellion brewing in opposition to a situation where governmental powers seem to have lost their way in terms of kindness and empathy toward their own residents and in international relations. And just as “every action has an equal and opposite reaction” in the realm of physics, so too does this apply, it would seem, to the domain of sociology and cultural affairs. The pendulum swings, and it swings back.

To further unpack the outer planet connections that are now in play, and even more greatly emphasized in the upcoming Leo New Moon two weeks ahead, we have Uranus in close forming trine to Pluto, which, like the 60s, can reference rebellion and cultural metamorphosis in the face of a dysfunctional status quo. Saturn and Neptune in close conjunction and in relationship to these can additional symbolize bringing a process of imagination to a locked-up situation, like applying a sort of cosmic grease to a stuck axel. And this can indeed apply to our individual lives as well as for the collective. There may be places within ourselves that are similarly stuck in some significant way, and these may, with conscious effort, be able to become unstuck if we can have faith in our process.

As far as Neptune and Saturn in combination, these powerful archetypes also remind us that fantasy and images have their potency and are in this connection to Saturn made more directly manifest. Imagination lays the tracks for the reality train, as celebrated visionary activist Caroline Casey often reminds us. Neptune bolstered by Saturn may therefore reference bringing mystical components such as “love thy neighbor” into real world manifestation. It is interesting to recall that on June 14th there were some five million protestors in the streets, all across the US, in reaction to governmental policies toward immigration and warfare. The Moon that morning was in Aquarius, conjunct to Pluto.

These cultural reflections relate as well to the Capricorn sign that the Moon occupies currently, a zodiac sign that is vitally concerned with society and its protections. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, while the Sun is in Cancer where Jupiter, related to Neptune, is exalted; and Neptune is exalted in Leo, the Sun’s natural ruler. We are seeing in all this a rising consciousness that something in the society needs adjustment along spiritual lines.

The bottom-line message that we can draw from this Full Moon, accompanied by such vital and challenging outer planet combinations – and in the signs of Capricorn for the Moon and of nurturing Cancer for the Sun – is that we are this summer hovering on the brink of a growing sense of cultural change that may well be comprehensive and life-affirming; and the other lesson of history that we might need to apply right now is that it will take every one of us, each acting out of our own internal mandate, to pull it through.
