Rulerships

Rulership in astrology describes the network of relationships between planets, signs, and houses. This section covers both sides of those relationships—what influences this planet or point, and what it governs within the chart.

When a planet is placed in a sign, it is shaped by the planet that rules that sign—usually called its Dispositor. If the sign has both a Modern and Traditional ruler, both are listed to support multiple interpretive approaches.

The Dispositor channels or modifies the planet's energy based on its own nature and placement. Closely related is the House Ruler, which refers to the planet that rules the sign on the cusp of the house the planet is located in. This is only shown when the house cusp is in a different sign than the planet itself—offering insight into which planetary energy governs the environment the planet is expressing through. The Chart Ruler is a special designation applied to the planet that rules the sign of the Ascendant (rising sign). This planet often plays a central role in shaping an individual's overall orientation or approach to life.

Traditional astrology adds further nuance with additional rulership systems:

Triplicity Rulers are based on the element of the sign and the sect of the chart (day or night). We list all three rulers in this order: the in-sect ruler, the out-of-sect ruler, and the participating ruler.

Term Ruler (or Bound Ruler) comes from dividing each sign into five unequal segments, each assigned to a planet. TimePassages uses the Egyptian Terms.

Decan Ruler (or Face Ruler) comes from dividing each sign into three equal 10° sections. Each segment is ruled by a different planet and adds subtle flavor to the placement.

Finally, under Houses Ruled, we list any houses in the chart associated with signs ruled by the planet in question. This reflects the areas of life the planet governs and influences directly.

Together, these rulership designations show how planetary energy is shaped, channeled, and expressed—revealing both the influences a planet receives and the areas of life it helps guide.
