RETROGRADES

Retrograde motion occurs when a planet appears to reverse its direction through the zodiac from our perspective on Earth. This shift is part of the natural rhythm of planetary movement and is especially significant in timing and interpretation. A retrograde phase often marks a time when the energy of the planet becomes more internalized, reflective, or redirected.

Each retrograde cycle includes several phases: direct motion, when the planet moves forward through the zodiac; stationing, when the planet slows and appears nearly still; and retrograde motion, when the planet moves backward through the signs. These phases can signal periods of heightened intensity, delays, or opportunities to revisit unresolved themes related to that planet's influence.

Retrogrades vary in length depending on the planet. The outer planets spend several months of each year in retrograde, creating long-term themes, while the inner planets retrograde more briefly but often bring sharper shifts. Tracking a planet's motion offers valuable insight into how and when its energy is most active.
