DECLINATION

Declination measures how far north or south a planet is from the celestial equator, similar to how latitude works on Earth. While most astrological positions are based on zodiacal longitude (the familiar 360-degree wheel), declination adds a second dimension—vertical distance from the celestial equator.

Planets that share a similar declination may be said to form parallels (when they are on the same side of the equator) or contraparallels (when on opposite sides). These relationships can function like aspects, particularly resembling conjunctions or oppositions.

Declination can offer additional insight into a planet’s influence, especially when analyzing parallels, contraparallels, or whether a planet is out of bounds—exceeding the Sun’s maximum declination and potentially acting in an exaggerated or unconventional way.
