RETROGRADE SHADOW

The retrograde shadow refers to the range of degrees a planet travels three times: first in direct motion (pre-retrograde shadow), then in retrograde motion, and finally again in direct motion (post-retrograde shadow). For Mercury, this range typically spans 12–15 degrees and lasts several weeks.

The shadow period can carry the tone of the retrograde itself. While the exact retrograde dates are most concentrated, meaningful themes often emerge in the lead-up and take time to fully integrate afterward. Some astrologers advise waiting until a planet clears its post-retrograde shadow before initiating major new directions.
