HOUSE CALCULATION METHODS

House systems determine how the twelve houses are divided in a birth chart. These methods influence where planets fall by house and can subtly shift the interpretation of key themes in a chart. While the signs are fixed in size and order, the houses vary depending on the calculation method used.

TimePassages uses Placidus as the default system. This is a quadrant-based method widely used in Modern astrology, which calculates intermediate house cusps based on time and motion. We also support Whole Sign Houses, favored in many Traditional and Hellenistic approaches, where each house begins at the start of a zodiac sign, with the Ascendant sign always becoming the first house.

Other available systems include Equal House, Koch, and Campanus, among others. When the exact time of birth is unknown, TimePassages uses the Equal House system with a sunrise chart to provide a balanced approximation. You can change your house system preference at any time in the chart settings.
