April dawns upon us astrologically with a gigantic spiritually-oriented splash in the wake of the rather extreme energy of the recent Aries New Moon and Solar Eclipse from just two days before the current month began. This Aries lunation cycle has nearly its entire thirty-day span yet to go, covering almost the whole of April. With the two inner planet retrogrades still happening as April begins, and, now, Neptune suddenly in Aries, and as well the mere fact of retrograde Mercury in this recent eclipse configuration at 0° 28’ of Aries being ½ degree away from Neptune at 29° 57’ Pisces on the very edge of the Aries sign, we have an inspired and yet an introspective, confusing, and deceptive Neptunian month to contend with. The recent eclipse governing the April month has also many other outer planet combinations, including transformational Pluto, stodgy, limiting Saturn, and the surprise twists and turns of Trickster Uranus in Taurus all highlighted, confirming what will surely be a memorable time as we attempt to keep our heads on straight through it all.
The retrogrades of Mercury and Venus are winding up in the first half of April, specifically on the 7th and the 12th, and these dates are quite significant, featuring a tight triple conjunction in Pisces of Venus, Saturn, and Mercury on the 7th, and the Libra Full Moon on the 12th. Mercury slowly recovers from its backward motion over the next two and a half weeks, escaping its post-retrograde shadow on the 26th of the current month. Venus takes a little longer, officially getting back to where she left off by May 15th.
The powerful eclipse that governs most of April – right through to the 27th – has many outer planets configured in close aspect to each other, including Mars square Chiron, Saturn to Uranus, a sextile, and nebulous Neptune in conjunction with Mercury, in retrograde, so that our thinking is liable to be a little fuzzy, even wobbly, as we navigate this difficult month. With the Saturn-Uranus contrast, what is real and rule-abiding is in collusion with what is, instead, rule-breaking, so that we have innovation, which is a Good Thing, and yet also destabilization, which might be, on the other hand, somewhat confounding. The Chiron presence can serve to remind us of where we might be caught up in our own inner wounding, the residue of unresolved childhood trauma, and where we might, by accepting our flaws and giving loving attention to them, yet heal.
Interestingly, in the Full Moon of the 12th, with the Moon at 23° of Libra, the Sun, opposed, is precisely conjunct Chiron, at 23° of Aries, bringing up a further episode when we might encounter our own inner wounding.
The presence of Pluto in early Aquarius is also prominent in the eclipse configuration, ensuring that transformation continues to be the name of the game. As Bob Dylan assures us, this is all just part of being human. In the volatile1960s, of which we have a not-so-distant echo now, he was able to articulate that “everybody not busy being born is busy dying.”
Another important lunation takes place on the 20th, when the Last Quarter Moon lands in 1° Taurus, while Mars is also at 1° Leo, opposed the Aquarius Sun conjunct Pluto, and square the presence of the new Nature planet, Haumea, that I have been researching as having to do with the truth coming out, lies exposed, always a favorite moment for the politicians. In the case of this climactic moment, we also have Mars opposite Pluto, which can be volatile, so that we might want to watch our words and count to ten before reacting. This intense opposition of Mars and Pluto is enhanced by the quarter Moon Sun and Moon in square, in the phase that noted 21st century astrologer Dane Rudhyar called a “crisis of consciousness” when treasured prior opinions must potentially yield to new attitudes and realizations.
So with all this intensity built into the April astrology, including Eris, spiritual warrior for soul intention and for taking a stand for yourself as you can find this necessary, we are definitely up against it. The good thing in all this is, however, that when we can consult our inner guidance, our true innermost principles and values, and only these, we can come to a sense of peace amidst the maelstrom. In any case, we know where we ourselves stand, in spite of everything, and that can be enough.
