This is a transformative month for you, Gemini, seeing as how there is so much action in your eighth solar house of intimacy and individual evolution. This has in some ways been a three-year period of personal readjustment. You will likely be delving deep inside yourself for a better handle on who you really are, with implications as well for the close partnerships in your life, either business or romantic. Your ruler, Mercury, is retrograding through this same sector so that there is a distinctly introspective air to these proceedings, with intuition from the unconscious layers of your psyche also featured. This would be a good timing to record your night-time dreams, and for journaling in general, as you attempt to get a better handle on who at base you really are, and how to follow your deepest vision for yourself into the 2023 year. The beginning weeks of the new year are a very future-oriented time period for you as well, with January being great for research and meditating on potential course corrections, and February for taking considered action along the lines of what you have determined to be the one right way to go.
The following was written by our resident monthly columnist Elodie St-Onge Aubut of Ninth House Astrology
The New Year may begin on a quiet note and you could be feeling unusually introspective as January arrives. The recent Capricorn Solstice and Christmastime New Moon emphasized, for you, personal transformation and intimacy with important others, while fortunate Jupiter was also highlighted in your sector of friendship and societal contribution. This could be an active time for you socially, in a subdued sort of way, as you more thoroughly explore your depths. Your ruling planet Mercury has also been moving retrograde in Capricorn since the 29th of December and Mars is still moving retrograde in your sign for another two weeks. This means that you do not need to rush into your New Year’s resolutions but instead it may be easier to take stock of the energetic investments that could be draining you as this reorientation process is taking place.
The latter part of January – when Mercury once again changes to forward motion – could bring a shift in perspective, especially as it pertains to your dreams for the year ahead and you may feel your priorities continuing to be in a state of flux. Then, Mercury finally escapes its retrograde shadow on February 7th.
The beginning of January might find you obsessing over a particular idea, person or situation without knowing exactly what to do about it. You may need to wait until the latter part of the month to know where things are heading, so be patient if things seem to be moving slowly or if you are feeling anxious about the future.
Venus enters Aquarius on the evening of the 2nd which will gradually bring a greater sense of perspective in the weeks ahead. You may feel like there is still so much to learn and it’s a good time to keep an open mind about what’s possible. You could feel both excited and ambivalent about the future but as long as you keep your long-term goals in mind you should feel empowered by what’s possible.
The Cancer Full Moon arrives on the 6th of January in the sector of your chart that relates to your resources and your values. This lunar phase might bring up issues of self and other, or partnership agreements that you have going might unexpectedly take a sudden swerve in the curve at this time. In one peak of the Mercury Retrograde period, meetings, plans, or mechanical systems might go awry. Additionally, since this Full Moon is culminating in her home sign of Cancer, there can be themes related to safety, sustainability, and nourishment coming up at this time. You may be aware of situations or frameworks that do not offer you the sustenance needed and you could be ready to let go of any false sense of security that is thwarting your progress. Uranus in Taurus forms a sextile to the Full Moon which may bring realizations surrounding impermanence which in turn could help you gather the courage needed to take a leap of faith.
The next day, Mercury in retrograde motion in Capricorn meets the Sun for its inferior conjunction Cazimi, on January 7th from 2 am to 8 am PT (or 5 am to 11 am EST) signaling Mercury in the heart of the Sun which is associated with a moment of clarity and enlightenment. This early morning moment of Mercury Cazimi may bring realization surrounding support coming from others or the lack thereof and the way forward from contracts or agreements that may be weighing too heavily on your shoulders.
Mars turns direct in Gemini on the 12th after two and a half months of retrograde motion and this should gradually bring you renewed vitality and traction in the weeks and months ahead. Mercury turns direct about a week later, on the 18th, again shifting the energy. If there are things that are not working properly, it may be impossible to ignore them any longer. Mercury then gradually recovers its lost zodiacal ground, emerging from its retrograde shadow after the end of the month.
The Sun also meets Pluto in Capricorn on the 18th and this could bring up greater intensity or even power struggles, especially in your personal relationships.
A definite change of pace arrives around the 20th when the Sun enters your fellow Air sign of Aquarius, which could bring a renewed sense of direction in the coming weeks.
The New Moon in Aquarius a day later, on January 21st, signals the beginning of a new cycle in your beliefs and worldview, or educational projects. Thanks to Jupiter in Aries forming a supportive aspect to the Sun and Moon, the nature of this timing might feel especially good for long-term goals and passions. With Venus and Saturn coming together in Aquarius, a pragmatic undercurrent permeates the New Moon. Simultaneously, trickster and sudden magic maker Uranus turning direct in Taurus in this New Moon configuration could highlight innovations and forward-thinking ideas. The future is calling and you may be able to intuit the shape of things to come, perhaps relative to your career or something dear to your heart.
The last week of January sees Venus entering her exalted home of Pisces on the evening of the 26th, emphasizing the vocational sector of your chart.
From January 28th to the 30th, the Sun in Aquarius forms a trine with Mars in your sign of Gemini and the new planet Makemake in Libra, forming a grand trine. This could be good for lining up your creativity with what deeply moves you, and for allowing your work in the actual world to speak for what you feel in your private depths. You might still feel unsure about the future and your path ahead, and you can lean on your courage, your inner resilience, and your intuition to guide you toward your most authentic way forward. That same weekend, Mercury, your ruler, in Capricorn trines Uranus in Taurus, so that things may be a lot more fluid as January comes to a close. There could also be surprises. You could find yourself now better equipped to begin to make some important decisions heading into February.
