New Moon in Virgo: Discernment, Reclaiming Agency, and the Return to Wholeness

The New Moon arrives at 18 degrees and 25 minutes of Virgo on September 10, 2026, at 8:26 PM Pacific Time, later evening for the East Coast and early morning the next day for Europe and points farther east. This New Moon marks the beginning of a new cycle after the wild whirlwinds of Eclipse Season, which for many of us likely brought along changes of direction and fated turnings that will ripple into the coming six months. The Moon in Virgo reminds us of the quiet, careful art of discernment. While the work of choosing is not always easy, it is nearly always worthwhile. This cycle beckons us to reflect on what in our lives and in our world truly serves our own higher good and the greater whole, as well as what it may be time to lovingly return to the proverbial mulch pile. This lunation brings us a slew of dynamic astrology, but one that may cast its color over the whole coming cycle is Uranus stationing retrograde just hours before, surging its electric, revolutionary pulse through the ethers. We may keep our eye out for surprises, find innovations to tricky problems, check our biases, and allow for some extra space as unexpected events may crop up throughout this month.

This particular Moon, at 18 degrees, forms a close sextile to Mars in Cancer at 19 degrees. We also find the true Black Moon Lilith at 17 degrees of Capricorn, in a close opposition to Mars and a trine to the Moon. Perhaps this looks like an emotional, internal investigation into the places where we have relinquished our own agency in order to remain emotionally safe and in connection with other. There may be some way now that we are being shown where our anger is pointing us, toward the parts of ourselves, the expressions of ourselves, that were at some point unwelcome at the table and are now asking to be re-embraced. This may be a time to welcome a little wildness, to find movement, to dance and let emotion move through us in ways that support our overall sense of wellness. As our nervous systems reorganize toward greater capacity, they can allow this fiery, direct, empowered Mars energy to move through us with more freedom. In short, this lunation carries strong themes of reclaiming our sacred anger and honoring the healthy expression of how Mars wants to move through each of us.

Another strong dynamic in this New Moon configuration is Chiron, which has recently moved into Taurus, opposite Venus at 0 degrees of Scorpio, conjunct Haumea at 2 degrees of Scorpio. It feels important to note that Venus will station retrograde in Scorpio on October 3, and so she is well within her shadow period now. We are likely beginning to feel and see the quality of what this Venus retrograde may hold for us. Some of these themes may include an emotional deep dive into the core patterns and nuanced nature of our connection style, and how we do vulnerability, whether that means allowing ourselves to be vulnerable or protecting ourselves, and what that looks like for each of us. There may be a real sense in this New Moon, and in the thirty-day lunation cycle that follows, of wounding, especially around themes of femininity or our relationship to women. There is also, with the Chiron placement, ideally, a presencing of the somatic, a feeling into body intelligence as a source of wisdom and abundance. Perhaps we find ourselves reclaiming our self-worth and self-love, going gently into the places that believe they are unworthy of love, and ideally recovering and resting into our own inherent sense of goodness.

Though they are not sitting precisely at the zero-degree mark, this Chiron-Venus opposition is also making contact with the three outer planets we return to again and again throughout the rest of this year: Pluto at 3 degrees of Aquarius, Neptune at 3 degrees of Aries, and Uranus at 5 degrees of Gemini. All of these early-degree aspects point us toward discovering, and collectively living into, a new story. This leads us to the ruler of the New Moon chart, which is Mercury, at 0 degrees of Libra, quincunx Chiron, opposite Neptune, and trine both Pluto and Uranus. Here we find our rational awareness, and a sense of how we might best use our minds during this time, which is to embrace paradox, to say "both and," to embrace compromise and the meeting of one another halfway, to use the power of our minds to seek balance, fairness, and justice. Because Mercury is opposite Neptune, we may also discover a heightened longing to feel into poetic beauty as a healing balm for tired, weary hearts, leaning into the artistic, the poetic, and the imaginative dimensions of the human experience to help us metabolize the very intense crises and challenges of our time. This can also look like a tendency to become lost in confusion or delusion. And yet, if we allow for a relaxation, an open-handed and loosely held way of carrying our own experience, perhaps a new awareness can come through, arriving as we open our minds to seeing something anew, ushering ourselves through the discomfort of anxiety or uncertainty in order to reach that new realization.

And so the wild turnings of 2026 continue. May this New Moon usher in a cycle in which we are able to confront and welcome the wisdom of our own fierce, clear agency and sense of choice. And, at the very same time, may we soften. May we lay down our biases. May we feel into the imagined possibilities available to us even in these incredibly trying times. May our minds be steeped in beauty, may our hearts be supported by deep comfort, and may we welcome the wholeness of ourselves back to the table, as we weave a fabric of coherence together to create the world in which all may belong, thrive, and be free.
