The New Moon in Gemini arrives on June 14th at 7:53 PM Pacific Time, coming to exact position at 24° 02’ of the sign. The Sun and Moon gathered here remind us that following our genuine curiosity is a magical balm that helps open gateways in our own minds and hearts, and in our world. We are invited to look upon the current situation we find ourselves in and ask how it might be met with genuine listening, receiving what is so rather than forcing what we might expect or wish to be true. Gemini asks of us flexibility, adaptability, and the wisdom to navigate any outer context while still knowing ourselves, even as the tides continue to shift.
The Moon's position at 24° Gemini is echoed by Jupiter in Cancer at 26°, forming a semi-sextile, and by Eris at 25° Aries, forming a sextile. Together these connections create a magnification of awareness around the emotional weight of what we are witnessing, both the injustice present in our world and the deep urge within us to stand in the face of it, on the side of what we know in our heart is true and good. Also active at this lunation, Chiron forms a wider sextile to the New Moon degree from the very last degree of Aries. Though more attenuated in orb, this Chiron presence with the New Moon degree carries real significance: this is the final New Moon with Chiron in Aries before moving on into Taurus on June 19th. Anaretic degrees, those final degrees at 29° of a sign, are sensitive and charged, and so we may feel some exaggerated ripples of Chiron in Aries before it moves on.
The Chiron signature in this New Moon has asked us to reckon with the pain of radical individualism experienced as separation from relationship and community, the "my way or the highway" wound, and yet also the integration of that long journey, which at its highest expression looks like holding sovereignty within the context of interdependence, the capacity to remain fully and authentically oneself while remaining in genuine connection with others. As Chiron moves into Taurus next week, a whole new dimension of the wounded healer's expression could emerge, one that examines wounding and wisdom around embodiment, values, material resources, and self-worth.
Also threading through this lunation, Venus at 1° Leo is moving toward her opposition with Pluto and a trine with Neptune, both of which will perfect in the days following the New Moon. As these aspects form, we may feel a keenly heightened sensitivity around our sense of pleasure, worth, and our relational connections. With Venus involved with Neptune and Pluto, power dynamics and the potential for confusion or disillusionment are present in connection with relationship, and yet so are genuine pathways toward clarity, toward expressing ourselves more fully as creative vessels and channels. There is compassion here, and wonder. Perhaps most of all, there is an invitation to the courage and daring it truly takes to have hope, and the bold imagination required to help birth ourselves into a better world.
A particularly potent dimension of this lunation is the position of Black Moon Lilith in opposition to the New Moon from either 19° or 21° Sagittarius, depending on whether True or Mean Lilith is invoked. Lilith often prompts us to invite the shadow expression of the sign she occupies back into the fold, and in Sagittarius those exiled expressions might look like wild playfulness, boisterousness, off-the-cuff speech, spontaneity, and anywhere we have felt ourselves to be “too much.” This is a moment to welcome back what we have disowned, to integrate it in a way that makes sense with who we are now. The Gemini-Sagittarius axis serves the metabolizing of experience, the digesting of information and the intentional making of meaning. We might ask ourselves: what meanings are we habitually constructing from our thoughts and the events around us? And is there a more empowered, more truthful lens available to us, one we might consciously choose and polish?
Also to be considered, the ruling planet of this lunation is Mercury, currently in the neighboring sign of Cancer and slowing toward its retrograde station, which runs from June 29th through July 23rd, with two weeks of recovery thereafter. Mercury in Cancer turns our contemplation toward the domestic sphere, family life, and the question of what truly nourishes us, what brings emotional satisfaction and a felt sense of safety. These are rich and worthy threads to sit with in the weeks ahead, as Mercury will remain in Cancer all the way through August 9th.
The times through which we are living do not cease to challenge us in their complexity, their velocity, their demand that we find new ways to digest and metabolize what is unfolding. We remain in a season of rapid and potent change, and this summer will continue to bring a period of extremely transformative astrology. May we each do our best to meet it with a lens of empowerment, kindness, and compassion, tapping into our deepest intentionality as we work together to birth a world where we can be in right relationship with one another, the Earth, and with all that is.
