Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System, and in astrological terms its positive expression represents expansive energy, faith, hope, teaching and learning, good fortune, and the exploration of new territory. Some of Jupiter’s less savory inclinations include ill-informed notions of grandiosity, excessive behavior or consumption, or abandoning common sense in the quest for novelty and excitement. Jupiter’s orbit around the Sun is approximately 12 years, so that he spends roughly one year in each sign. From October 10th, 2017 until November 8th, 2018, Jupiter makes his journey through Scorpio, the fixed water sign of depth, power, sexuality, death, rebirth, mystery and hidden secrets. This is a vitally important transit, which many astrologers have been writing about.
Jupiter’s ingress month (time of entering) into Scorpio is accompanied by conjunctions with both Mercury (on October 18th) and the Sun (on October 26th), creating a rather impressive splash down, and a resounding ripple that is palpable in worldly events. We see the #metoo movement, referencing the ubiquitous sexual harassment experienced by nearly all women, exploding on social media– thus revealing the collective pain body, imbalance of power, and distorted sexual dynamics lurking in the shadows patriarchal society. The trigger point was the scandal involving director Harvey Weinstein, eventually revealing upwards of 50 women making allegations of sexual harassment, and frequently assault, against the extremely powerful Hollywood mogul– and from what many in the film making industry are reporting, this violation and subjugation of women is FAR from isolated to this one man. In politics, George W. Bush (while perhaps an unlikely player on this stage!) is re-emerging into the public eye, making a statement renouncing the bigotry, hatred, and cruelty running rampant in the United States. Even an 88- year-old ex-CIA recruit has surfaced, reportedly claiming to know “the truth” about the dark secrets of the JFK assassination. Jupiter magnifies whatever he touches, and it is no wonder that his presence in the sign of power, secrecy, and sexuality is shining an unflinching spotlight into the darker corners of the human psyche, a place where most human society tends to avoid and resist awareness.
Jupiter’s journey through Scorpio could manifest in each of our individual lives and spheres in a myriad of ways. Perhaps great fortune and blessings will be bestowed, along with the difficult trade-off of having to face something within ourselves that we’ve continually suppressed because it is so painful to be with. Healing sexual trauma and coming into greater fluency in sexuality is likely to be a big theme. Long hidden family secrets or “elephants in the room” could suddenly be brought out into the open. You may feel called upon to learn about mystic arts, or the occult – such as astrology, witchcraft, subtle energy work, tarot, tantra, etc.
In order to expand into new evolutionary territories and ways of being, it may be necessary to first engage in the process of diving deeply into scary places. We are being asked to have faith, and fall into the deep waters. We are faced with a choice: when the ocean of life is pulling us down into the dark depths of our own psyches, do we fight the current, or do we surrender willingly to the process? In bringing more of your awareness to these places, you can more deeply know and embody the truth of your Power in an authentic, aligned, and loving way. Carl Jung famously wrote “What you resist, persists.” For when we have an aversion to something, it is our own resistance to it that re-enforces its presencein our experience and life circumstance. In this potent and revealing time, may we be supple, yet courageous. Yielding, yet fierce. May we bring our gentle, loving awareness to the parts of us that are most afraid, and boldly embrace our faith in the Great Mystery of our life’s process.
With many Blessings,
Leslie Benson
